Sports Med Utah Goes to the Winter Olympics

Since 2005, local athletes have associated advanced sports medicine with Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and Sports Med Utah. This February, the hospital’s reputation for world-class sports medicine will travel halfway around the globe to PyeongChang, South Korea, under the leadership of Dr. Andrew Cooper, team physician for the U.S. Ski Team.

This year, Dr. Cooper will help cover 4 teams at the 2018 Winter Olympics: the men’s Freeski, women’s Freeski, half-pipe and slopestyle teams. “It’s my second Olympics, Sochi 2014 was my first, as the head team physician for the U.S. freeski team.  Each year I get to travel a few times with the U.S. Ski Team to different parts of the world,” says Dr. Cooper, who will be making his third trip to South Korea this February. “I went with the half-pipe team last year and the slopestyle team two years ago for test events,” he says. “We take these trips to look at the facilities and try to get a handle on what’s going on before the Olympic games.”

Keeping athletes healthy through rigorous training periods and qualification events is no small feat. “Freeski is a fairly high risk sport,” says Dr. Cooper, “maybe one of the more high risk sports within the U.S. Ski Team family. There’s jumping, pivoting, and twisting sometimes with obstacle like rails on the course.” To keep his team in the best possible health, Dr. Cooper relies on partners like Salt Lake Regional Medical Center.

“We utilize a lot of Salt Lake Regional Medical Center’s resources,” he says. “I have performed more surgeries then I care to count on Olympians at Salt Lake Regional. The hospital has been great in supporting them and me.”

In addition to supporting Olympic-level athletes, Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and Sports Med Utah serve as the proud partners of many other local athletic organizations, including Ballet West, Westminster Griffins, Utah Falconz, and ReAL Salt Lake (Utah’s only Major League Soccer team).

For thirteen years, Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and Sports Med Utah along with Dr. Andrew Cooper, have pioneered sports medicine technology and expertise in the Salt Lake Valley. The clinic’s unique Acceleration Program helps athletes determine their maximum agility, strength, endurance and anaerobic thresholds, while also customizing training programs based on athletes’ individual abilities. Emergency care, injury prevention, orthopedic surgery, and physical therapy services have all contributed to making the hospital’s Sports Medicine program a truly indispensable service for the Salt Lake Valley.
