Advanced Sports Care for Amateurs & Professionals
Physicians, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and athletic trainers with the Sports Medicine Center of Utah provide care for amateur and professional athletes throughout the Salt Lake City Area, including:
- U.S. Ski Team
- Ballet West
- Westminster Griffins
- Utah Falconz
- Real Salt Lake (Utah’s only Major League Soccer team)
As a partner of Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, the Sports Medicine Center of Utah provides advanced surgical care and state-of-the-art rehab facilities. Sports physicals for the 2018-2019 school year will be available in the practice’s facilities throughout the Salt Lake Valley.
“Our physicians, therapists, and trainers care for a number of high school teams around Salt Lake,” says Dr. Stephen Kirk. “From football to cross-country to basketball and volleyball, we see it all. Pre-participation physicals, while required, are a great opportunity for players who may not otherwise see a physician to get checked out. From time to time, we do find signs of injury or illness that may have otherwise progressed unchecked. These physicals are a valuable opportunity to identify potential problems and develop treatment plans.”
What Happens In a School Sports Physical?
Prior to evaluation, parents and students may be asked to fill out a form answering some basic questions about the student’s medical history. The information on this form gives health care providers some basic information about the student. This is especially important if the patient is new to the practice.
During the examination, sports medicine physicians like Dr. Kirk may examine basic health indicators, such as lung function and range of motion. Patients may be released with a full clearance for athletic activity, restricted clearance, or a denial of clearance pending further medical evaluation. Following the appointment, students will receive a clearance form that can be taken back to the school.
“Our team at the Sports Medicine Center of Utah cares for a diverse group of athletes at all levels, from amateur to professional,” says Dr. Kirk. “Preparticipation physicals are an opportunity for us to give back to the community in the sense that we’re able to bring our knowledge and expertise from the pro sports circuit and apply that to the unique needs of these student-athletes.”
