The Center for Precision Joint Replacement: Hips, Knees, and Shoulders

The Center is a leader in advanced surgical technologies and the only hospital in the state of Utah to offer Mako™ total hip arthroplasty and Mako™ partial knee arthroplasty.

Mako™ Technology for Hip Replacements
Mako offers patients with severe osteoarthritis of the hips a superior alternative to traditional hip replacement. Prior to the procedure, the surgeon orders a CT scan, which is used to create a 3-D model of the hips. On the day of the procedure, the surgeon uses the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System and the 3-D model to optimally place a patient-specific hip implant. Most patients experience less pain, smaller incisions, and a quicker recovery. Many patients are able to walk the same day.

Mako™ Technology for Partial Knee Replacements
Individuals with early- to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee may be candidates for the Mako partial knee resurfacing procedure. Prior to the procedure, the surgeon orders a CT scan, which is used to create a patient-specific implant. During the surgery, degenerative bone tissue is removed and the patient-specific implant is optimally placed to ensure maximum comfort and life. Most patients experience less pain, smaller incisions, and a quicker recovery. Many patients are able to walk the same day.

Mako™ Technology for Total Knee Replacements
Mako Total Knee is the newest application for the Mako System, allowing orthopedic surgeons at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center to execute their surgical plans with greater accuracy than ever before. With improved accuracy and control, soft tissue and ligaments may be better protected from damage, allowing for a quicker recovery and improved post-operative knee functionality.

The operation is similar to the Mako Partial Knee Replacement procedure described above in that a personalized surgical plan is developed using advanced scanning technology and a 3D virtual model. Mako Total Knee Replacement may be an option for people with severe knee pain or stiffness who have not experienced sufficient relief with more conservative treatment options.

Don't Suffer with Shoulder Pain
Forty years ago, Patrick G., injured his right shoulder. Following the initial injury, when he played sports, he’d have pain, but the next day it would be gone. As years went by, the pain lasted longer and was more severe, eventually limiting the use of his arm to the point where he could no longer perform normal activities of daily living. That’s when he decided to see Steward Health Care Orthopedic Surgeon Pamela Jones, MD, and he hasn’t looked back.
